A Heart Clinic, Here for Our Communities
From the very beginning, we dedicated ourselves to the patients and strove for excellence in our communities.
The Metropolitan Heart and Vascular Institute (MHVI) is a heart clinic that traces its roots to the communities of Minneapolis’ northern suburbs, when Drs. Brian Anderson and Margo Tolins joined Midwest Internal Medicine in 1986. In the beginning, diagnostic coronary angiography was performed by our cardiologists at Mercy and Unity Hospitals, and patients who required angioplasties or open heart surgery were then transported to Metropolitan Medical Center in Minneapolis for further care. With growth in the north/northwestern suburbs of Minneapolis-St. Paul came the demand for cardiovascular care to be delivered locally. The cardiologists began performing coronary angioplasty locally for the first time in the north metro. Mercy Hospital opened an open heart surgical program in 1989 and surgeons from Minnesota Thoracic Associates (now Twin Cities Heart and Lung) performed heart bypass and valve surgeries in Coon Rapids. Eventually Metropolitan Cardiology Consultants, P.A. was formed when cardiologists parted from Midwest Internal Medicine in 1994 to form an independent single specialty group with the specific goal of delivering state-of-art cardiology care to the community.
The next decade brought tremendous growth in patient volumes. To meet this demand Metropolitan Cardiology Consultants expanded their geographic reach, clinical services, and number of cardiologists and providers. In time, Metropolitan Cardiology Consultants became the provider of comprehensive cardiovascular care to the communities served by Mercy Hospital, Unity Hospital, Buffalo Hospital, Elk Ridge Health Center, Maple Grove and newer clinic sites in St. Michael, Cokato, and Annandale. With a focus on high quality care, our cardiologists and cardiac surgeons became regional leaders in their field and helped to achieve national recognition for the hospitals in which they served.
With further expansion in clinical services and patient volumes, Metropolitan Heart and Vascular Institute was formed in 2007 when Metropolitan Cardiology Consultants, Twin Cities Heart and Lung, and Allina Health formed a strategic partnership to streamline and deliver cardiovascular services under one unified organization. In 2012, Minneapolis Vascular Physicians joined MHVI, bringing their expertise in vascular surgery to complete our array of cardiovascular services. Currently, MHVI serves as an integrated organization that allows various providers of cardiovascular services to deliver high quality patient-centered care in general cardiology, interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, cardiovascular surgery, peripheral vascular disease, noninvasive cardiovascular imaging, and cardiac rehabilitation.
